“It’s not me, it’s you… According to my cat.”
As Valentine’s Day approaches, we decided to share survey results that confirm what many cat parents already know: in modern dating, cats aren’t just along for the ride… they’re calling the shots.
The results from nearly 1,000 respondents across the U.S. and Europe uncovered a set of surprising, relatable, and (occasionally) unhinged truths about how cats influence who gets a second date, who gets ghosted, and who earns serious long-term potential. From the rise of unmistakable “cat dad energy” to the growing belief that cats spot red flags faster than humans, the findings paint a clear picture of where dating culture is headed next.
In short: the future is feline.
“Cats are intuitive, honest, and unapologetically themselves,” said Jacob Zuppke, CEO of Whisker. “It makes sense that people who live with them are bringing those same values into their relationships.”
Cats have entered the chat
Cats are no longer third-wheeling in their owners’ romantic lives.
According to the survey,
76% of cat owners consider their cat’s reaction when dating
And nearly half say they would slow down, reconsider, or end a relationship if their cat didn’t approve [1]. It’s no longer about whether your cat loves you, but whether they like your partner too…
For many singles, a partner’s relationship with their cat isn’t a cute bonus, but it’s an important compatibility test. One in three respondents (32%) say their cat has directly influenced whether someone got a second date, and only a small minority would fully ignore their cat’s negative reaction. So if you’re thinking of first-date icebreakers, “Do you like cats?” might actually matter more than “So… what do you do for fun?”
This shift reflects a broader change in how people approach dating. Factors such as emotional safety, shared values, and long-term compatibility are increasingly prioritized over chemistry alone. Cats, who are deeply attuned to their environment and routines, become a proxy for those priorities and offer unfiltered feedback.
They sniff out the studs from the duds

Cat parents don’t only trust their cats’ instincts, but they rely on them.
42% of respondents believe their cat is better at spotting red flags than they are [1].
When asked who detects red flags the fastest, “my cat” beats out both friends and family. Cats have an instinct for genuine behavior. They cozy up to the kind-hearted and immediately side-eye anyone who feels insincere.
In the era of ghosting and dating fatigue, cats have stepped into their natural role of quality control; quietly observing, judging, and letting you know if a potential partner is worth your time in a single tail flick.
Cat dads get dates

Times have changed. Being a “cat-guy” is no longer a punchline.
Among people who date men, 62% view a man with a cat as a green flag, with only 1.5% seeing it negatively [1]. More than half of respondents rate men with cats as more emotionally intelligent than men without pets, and
77% say identifying as a “cat dad” or “cat mom” is attractive.
Translation? Attraction is getting a rebrand. Taking care of a cat requires patience, emotional awareness, and a deep respect for boundaries – qualities that are starting to matter way more than loud confidence or performative charm. These days, cat ownership is basically shorthand for empathy, reliability, and “this person might actually text back.”
My furry Valentine

The influence doesn’t stop at first dates. Cats are also reshaping how people spend Valentine’s Day itself.
More than a third of respondents say they have canceled Valentine’s Day plans to stay home with their cat.
42% would choose spending Valentine’s Day with their cat over their partner
[2], and many report that they’d spend more on Valentine’s gifts for their cat than for their significant other.
Romance, it seems, is being redefined. For cat owners, love isn’t about candlelit dinners or grand gestures (although those never hurt). It’s about comfort, consistency, and emotional availability. Skipping a night out isn’t anti-romance; it’s just prioritizing genuine connection and stress-free, unconditional companionship… plus zero awkward small talk.
The Future Is Feline
The findings reveal a clear cultural trend: cat owners are dating with higher standards, clearer boundaries, and a stronger sense of self, and their cats are a crucial part of that decision-making process.
As we continue to build products designed around the real lives of cats and their people, this survey underscores a broader truth shaping relationships, homes, and lifestyles alike. With its most advanced automatic litter box lineup to date, Litter-Robot 5 Pro, Litter-Robot 5, and Litter-Robot EVO, Whisker isn’t just about keeping things clean. It’s about making life more personalized, connected, and hassle-free for cats and the people who love them.
This Valentine’s Day and beyond, one thing is clear: cats aren’t just companions. They’re tastemakers, gatekeepers, and trusted advisors. The future is feline, and dating will never be the same.
