*How can I get my cat to use Litter-Robot?
Over 95% of cats acclimate to Litter-Robot*, and most begin using it within a few days to a week. (*Based on stated reasons for customer returns of Litter-Robot 4 and 3 over a one-year period). It's natural for some cats to be initially uncertain or wary of new objects in their territory. Litter-Robot 5 is designed to be as cat-friendly as possible, featuring QuietSift® technology that minimizes noise during the cleaning cycle. The cleaning cycle won’t begin until minutes after your cat has exited the automatic litter box, and you can extend the delay up to 30 minutes for skittish cats.
To ease the transition, place Litter-Robot where the old litter box was and, for a short time, keep both nearby. Mixing a cup of used litter into the clean litter in the Litter-Robot helps provide a familiar scent. You can also leave Litter-Robot turned off until your cat has tried it. With these steps—and a little patience—most cats adapt quickly, especially if they’re already used to a covered litter box. Learn more about acclimating your cat.
Can large cats use Litter-Robot 5?
Litter-Robot 5 is suitable for cats that weigh 3-30 lbs, including extra large breeds like Maine Coons or Norwegian Forest cats, making it the best litter box for large cats. With an entryway width of 15.75” and an interior height of 17.5”, almost any domestic cat can fit comfortably inside the globe.
Can kittens use Litter-Robot 5?
Yes. Kittens that weigh at least 3 lbs can safely use Litter-Robot 5 in automatic mode. The unit uses multiple lasers and weight sensor technology to detect when your cat enters and exits the globe, which then triggers the countdown timer and cleaning cycle.
For kittens under 3 lbs, we recommend using your Litter-Robot 5 in "semi-automatic" mode to keep your kitten safe and relieve you from litter box scooping. For "semi-automatic" mode, leave Litter-Robot powered off or unplugged. When you see your kitten has used it, wait about 7 minutes for the waste to clump, then power it on. Litter-Robot will automatically perform a clean cycle. Afterward, power it off again. Continue this supervised, semi-automatic mode until your kittens have reached 3 lbs to activate the SmartScale®.

Both Litter-Robot 5 models, our latest generation, are designed for multi-cat homes, kittens as small as 3 lbs, and large cats up to 30 lbs.
They are the same size and offer best-in-class technology, including WasteID™, an industry-first feature that distinguishes between urine and feces.
Litter-Robot 5 Pro includes an integrated dual camera system for advanced cat identification and richer individual insights.
This means you’ll be able to see which cat is using the unit and access more detailed data. Note that some features become more accurate over time as they learn from your household, typically optimizing after 30 days of regular use. (Some features require Whisker+.)
Will Litter-Robot eliminate all litter box odors?
Because waste is promptly removed and contained in the base, typical litter box odors will be significantly reduced with Litter-Robot.
Litter-Robot 5 features WasteID™ for more targeted odor control (learn more below), a sealed waste drawer, and a Carbon Filter to reduce odors.
You can opt to combine the Carbon Filter with OdorTrap Packs to eliminate litter box odors through natural chemistry.

How it works
How often do I need to replace the Litter-Robot Waste Drawer Liner, Carbon Filter, or OdorTrap® Packs?
Replace the Waste Drawer Liner whenever you need to empty the waste drawer. How often you empty the waste drawer depends on the number and size of your cats. Thanks to the large waste drawer, you may only need to empty the Litter-Robot 5 waste drawer as low as once every 10 days. For optimal odor absorption, we recommend replacing the Carbon Filter and OdorTrap® Packs every 2-4 weeks, but replacement frequency is up to you and your cats' usage patterns.
Does Litter-Robot require special litter?
The best litter for Litter-Robot is clumping clay litter. We recommend a high-quality, standard-weight, clay-based clumping litter, such as GreatLitter. Some silica gel litter beads and crystals can also be used with Litter-Robot, as long as they pass through the screen. However, translucent or white-colored litter (most often seen in crystal litter) may impact the litter level and Drawer Full Indicator (DFI) accuracy in Litter-Robot 5 and are therefore not recommended. Alternative, plant-based litters typically do not work with Litter-Robot as these may not be filtered properly through the sifting system. Litters that do not work in Litter-Robot are the strictly absorbent, non-clumping or loose-clumping litters, newspaper-based litters, and absorbent wood pellet litter.
Can Litter-Robot 5 be used on carpet?
Yes, Litter-Robot 5 can be used on any type of flooring.
